INTERNATIONAL KITE FESTIVAL
International Kite Festival kicks off on 14 January and its also is celebrated as Makar Sankranti.
Makar Sankranti celebrates the awakening of the Gods after 6 months of sleep and it is a festival
of happiness. Normally, around January the climate is cool and the skies are crystal clear prompting
everyone to take part in the jubilation.
People celebrate this festival by flying kites from dawn to dusk. The skies are filled with kites of
every colour and hue. The kites sway as if dancing in the breeze. The rooftops are crowded with
people of all age groups jostling to get a vantage point to launch their kites into the bright and lively
blue sky.
The Festival of Kites draws experts from all over the world. Some of them share their expertise
in making glass coated threads called ' Firkees' or 'Manja'. These strong glass coated threads are used
to cut an opponents kite in a duel in the sky.
Kite flying is popular all over the world, due to its cultural roots and the youthful enthusiasm .
